Nagahata has taught piano students of various levels, ages, and nationalities.
She aims to understand each student’s personal musical goals, and works to motivate and inspire her students to achieve those goals. In her teaching practice she emphasizes improving posture and hand position for more natural playing; developing musicality and evoking imagination, finding solutions to technical difficulties.
In addition to teaching in various schools in New York and Chicago, Nagahata has assisted in and taught a variety of classes at New York Summer Music Festival, including sight reading, piano techniques, and piano ensembles. She has also developed a curricular of music theory and ear training which she teaches to young musicians. As an active chamber musician, Nagahata taught as a guest faculty at Chicago Trio Chamber Music Workshop in 2016.
Perspective Master Class
Perspective Master Class is Nagahata’s original master class series founded in 2016. Unlike traditional master classes that reference different topics and problems for each student, Nagahata focuses on a single theme in each master class, for example, “phrasing”. Students will be able to understand better by observing other master class participants tackle the same topics.
